Very sad news today with the passing of Wales and Lions legend JJ Williams at the age of 72 The word legend is thrown about today like confetti but this man truly was a legend. Not only did he play for Wales in 70's winning Grand Slams and Triple Crowns but he also played for the unbeaten Lions on the tour to South Africa in 1974, scoring 5 tries. He then went on to play in the 1977 Lions Tour to New Zealand. If all that wasn't enough he was also a top class sprinter in his day. I could go on and on listing his achievements but here's an interesting anecdote regarding our own club from his book JJ Williams:
" As a youngster playing OH for Nantyfyllon i got 4 tries in one match against Llanharan, who were one of the strongest 2nd class sides in Wales. One of those tries came from our own in goal area. I reckon i must have side stepped, swerved and chipped the whole Llanharan team, some of them more than once! But it wasn't all a bed of roses, as i found out during the return fixture at Llanharan a fortnight later. They were waiting for me and not just on the pitch.
During the game when one of my touch kicks cleared the fence around the pitch, i skipped over it like a hurdler to fetch the ball. A little old lady handed me the ball but she was in no mood to complement me on my goal kicking ( i dropped 4 goals in the game) " we've had a gutsful of you lot" she said, whereupon she whacked me over the head with her umbrella and i thought for a moment i was going to be knocked out. Then, in case i hadn't got the message that this was no playful prank, she said : " Don't ever come back here again" Talk about a reality check"
Our condolences go out to JJ's family and friends.
