SCRIBE’S SPOTLIGHT ON ST PETER’S 2026/27

Our visitors finished a respectable 5^th in last year’s table – but it was their misfortune to face each of the top four team in their final games and not record a win.

St. Peter’s RFC, aka “The Rocks”, have been playing rugby in Cardiff since 1886, and of course we enjoyed many a battle with them in the old East District.

The club regards its foundation year as 1886, although it is not until 1888 that the first recorded reference to the club can be found - it was in the Western Mail, and was against St. Margarets, also of Roath.

One of the biggest results recorded by the club was beating Cardiff RFC 16-14 in the SWALEC Cup on 23 January 1993,  a win that stunned the world of rugby, a veritable David and Goliath act in the pre regions era.

In the club honours is a win in the prestigious Glamorgan Silver Ball competition 1985-86. They also have a notable Youth section, one which swept all before it in 2013/14. Current Cardiff Rugby and a Wales cap Sheedy is one of St Peter’s famous sons.

This was a difficult tie for the boys, after a weekend tour.

The Cardiff side gave us a tough time and actually won the try count 3-2.

We were again grateful to Codey Rees who converted the tries of Harley Thomson and Aled Llewellyn as well as landing three penalties.

A number of our promising Youth made the match day line-up.

With our first division promotion chase at a crucial stage and a game the following night we put out a Second XV against the Rocks. The Cardiff team had more strength up front and although our backs always seemed faster and sharper than the opposition, they rarely had the ball in good field positions. The sending off of number eight Paul Williams mid-way through the second half did not help either. We showed plenty of spirit though, and looked as though we were capable of winning it as we came back from 11-0 down to 11-8 early in the second half, but St Peters took the initiative to create a decisive 22-8 lead.
