Penarth Match Report 16/09/2023
3 games, 3 bonus points wins. This was a game with a lot at stake. Penarth were
still smarting from, having the division 3 champions title snatched away from
them on the last day of the season, so this game was always going to be intense.
The game began at a furious pace. From the opening kick off, the rotund figure of
Lloyd Gregory launched himself into the opposition 8 man, who had just caught
the ball, resulting in the ball being spilled and the 8 suffering from whiplash.
Lloyd then rubbed the 8’s head as if to say ‘Well done old bean”. At least I think
that’s what he said.
The dairymen set an incredible pace at the beginning of the game and were
unstoppable for the first 10 minutes, with first Ryan Russell, scrambling over out
wide, to prove rugby is not just a sport for the intelligent. Secondly, new boy, Joe
Davies, scored a try that would make, even the most die hard, Pontypool fan purr
with admiration. Joe 7 minutes into his first game in black and blue, hit a sublime
angle and went through the Penarth defensive line untouched and then proceed
to round the full back and touch down under the posts. Both tries were well
worked and required timing and accuracy, which proves that when the backs
split in training, they actually do something.
With the score at 12-0 a couple of mistakes by the Dairymen led to 2 easy tries
for the home side, allowing them a 14-12 lead at half time. However, this current
crop of Llanharan players are a tight and confident group, and there was no
panic.
The second half belonged to Llanharan, with first Leon Burton scampering over,
who has incidently, with the growth of his beard, made the final move towards
becoming an orthodox Jew.
The 4 th and bonus point try was scored by Jack Thomson, who made up for his
yellow card by controlling the driving line out and crashing over to score the last
try. This seemed to quite their crowd considerably.
The extra points were provided by the man made of toffee
Final score Penarth 24 – 33 Llanharan
