Llanharan Youth ended their season on a high with this win over Croesyceiliog Youth. Here is Head Coach Steve Roberts report on the game:
What a fantastic end to the youth's season. A tough, ground out, win against Croesyceiliog, a typical enormous Gwent team. After conceding an early try, the young Dairymen regathered and camped in the opposition's 22 and after a number of phases by the forwards, resulted in a try for "Mighty" Joe (Young) Holmes, which was converted by Connor Thomas who is still in year 11 with 2 years of youth rugby still ahead of him. With centre Owen Howells having a knock to the head we needed flanker Brook Hawkins to play in the centre, who put in a great shift, reminiscent of a young Scott Gibbs. The first quarter of the game then repeated itself with Croesyceiliog scoring a try and Llan scoring a similar forward's try, this time through another giant, Louis Willingham, again converted by young Connor Thomas. Score at half time was 14-10 to Llan. Croesyceiliog then made an early start to the second half and the first half repeated itself AGAIN. They scored early then Llan scored. This time through the backs finished by Ciaran Sibley who seemed to just keep running through tackle after tackle and get over the line. Again converted by young Connor Thomas. A momentary lack of concentration allowed the visiting side to score under the post which this time they converted. With the clock ticking away, Harry Roberts took a quick tap penalty in his own half and made the slowest break known to man due to him inheriting his dad's fast twitch muscles. He took the play down to 10m from the opposition's try line and Full back Tom Owen who was now at scrum half (as another Huckridge, Dan this time, was asked by the referee to have a 10 minute rest following some pretty footwork!!!) performed a great snipe to get over under the posts, this time missed by Connor as he said he wanted to make the end of the game exciting. The game was mostly in our half for the remaining 5 minutes and the opposition made a great break out wide to be quashed by an amazing cover tackle by Tom Owen now back at full back, who saved a definite try. He said he wanted to say that he scored the winning try. FINAL SCORE - WIN FOR LLAN 26 - 22! That wraps a season that has seen some fantastic progression by these young men and well done to them and good luck to those moving on to senior rugby. You will smash it.
