Llanharan U13s kicked off their Cardiff Cup campaign in winning style on Sunday, putting on a fantastic performance in front of a great home crowd at the Dairy Field.
The game started with a few early nerves—reflecting the intensity of the warm-up and the big crowd watching on—but the team settled quickly. Twm opened the scoring after some sharp handling, showing off his trademark fast feet and swerving hips to cross over for the first try.
The second try was particularly pleasing. Dewi broke the defensive line and looked certain to cross, but a fantastic last-ditch tackle from the Llandaff defense brought him down just short. Showing great awareness, Dewi popped the ball off the floor to an onrushing Jayden, who crashed over to score.
Ellis was next over the line, slicing cleanly through the defense in one of his trademark runs, after several strong phases of play.
Half-Time: Llanharan U13s 15 – 0 Llandaff U13s
Llanharan hit the ground running in the second half. Captain Marvel, Dewi, showed impressive pace to pull away from a stubborn Llandaff defense to score Llanharan's fourth try.
The fifth try was a highlight of the match. Strong rucking from the pack secured clean ball, allowing it to be spread wide. A superb offload from Jayden set Twm free, who returned the favor with an audacious offload back to Jayden to run in his second try of the game.
Dewi was back on the scoresheet shortly after. A slick strike move in the middle of the park saw Harry make good ground before a quick pick-and-go from the captain saw him outstrip the defense to score under the posts.
Another crisp move from a scrum proved equally fruitful. Dewi sniped blind before feeding Ellis, whose swift pass sent Harry scorching down the touchline for try number seven.
To their credit, Llandaff kept fighting and got a deserved try for all their hard work. Spreading the ball wide after some sharp handling, they put their winger into space 50 meters out, and he showed a brilliant turn of pace to finish under the posts.
The final try went to Milosz, capping off a fantastic performance. New to rugby this season, he collected a looping pass 40 meters out, displaying great pace and composure to cross the line. The huge celebration from the squad highlighted just how close-knit this group has become.
Conversions: Ellis (4 from 8)
While they didn't all make the scoresheet, the entire pack deserves immense credit. Joseph, Ifan, and Finn were powerful in the front row, with Finn and Ifan carrying tirelessly and Joseph showing real strength at the breakdown.
Second Row: Freddie and Toby worked non-stop. Freddie was a bundle of energy, chasing down the opposition at every opportunity, while Toby put in some huge hits that disrupted Llandaff's attack.
Back Row: Cooper, Dougie, and Harrison were outstanding throughout—applying pressure at the lineout, tidying up at ruck time, and supplying strong, dynamic carries to keep Llanharan on the front foot.
Backs: Rhys showed continued growth in his game, putting in crucial defensive work even when space was limited.
The Bench: Introduced shortly after half-time, the bench made a huge impact. Jesse brought great physicality around the park, Luca was a constant nuisance at the breakdown, and Evan looked to get involved at every opportunity. Milosz capped a memorable cameo with his first try.
A big thank you to Llandaff U13s for a fantastic contest. Despite the scoreline, they showed tremendous character, direct running, and impressive last-ditch tackling throughout.
It was a great morning of rugby and the perfect way to begin the Cardiff Cup campaign. A massive thank you as always to all the parents and supporters for their brilliant backing at the Dairy Field!
