I caught up with our former Player and Coach Jeff Pick this week, for a chat about his new venture. Jeff and his wife Carol have taken over the tenancy of St. David's RFC in Pembrokeshire. Unlike most rugby Clubs who employ a Steward/ess, Jeff owns the tenancy of the Club, which means that they run the whole show and stand or fall by their own decisions. Having taken over the Club at the end of last Summer, a good time for most Clubs, as the Rugby season starts, however it was difficult for them because St David's population swells from 2000 to 12000 in the Summer months, which means unlike most Rugby Clubs, Summer is probably their busiest period. They seem to be thriving on the challenge, with different entertainment on most weekends, including Bands, Open Mic nights and Carol's Sunday lunches going down really well with the locals.
Carol has used her sewing skills by making cushions in the Club's colours for the lounge, which has added a real Club feel to the place. Jeff tells me that the Club itself is about the size of our Hall, which is as we know is not small. Being a Rugby man has helped Jeff to integrate with the members of the Club and it wouldn't surprise me if he ended up coaching them one day.
They have already had visitors from Llanharan in the form of Phillip"Flapper"Morris, who apparently started a big sing song with all the locals joining in. If you're down that way call in, Jeff and Carol will give you a big welcome. Just one thing Jeff, you asked me to show your best side, which i have done, so you can breathe out now!
